Silver At The Silver Stick
Between Christmas and the New Year the Burlington Global Fuel Atom AA Blue Eagles were Championship finalists at the 2017 International Silver Stick Regional Qualifier in Stratford.
The first day of the tournament was a tough one. The Eagles started with a disappointing 3-0 loss to the Milton Winterhawks, a team that they have previously defeated in regular season play. That afternoon they tied the Hamilton Huskies, 1-1.
Fortunately things changed on day two. That morning they played the highly ranked Stratford Jr. Warriors. On day one, with two wins behind them the Warriors had 12 goals for and zero against, our team knew this game would be a challenge. Armed with that knowledge, our Eagles came out tough, battling for the puck and worked together as a team. The game was evenly matched, our team worked hard, skating right to the end, however it ended with a 1-0 loss. A disappointing final result after such a great effort.
The semi-final game was a re-match against the Milton Winterhawks. Playing as a more intense team, back-checking and passing, the game ended with a 3-2 Eagles’ victory. On to the Championship!
At the end of the first period of the Championship game, the Eagles had more shots on net than the Stratford Jr. Warriors and were out skating the Warriors. However, after allowing a short-handed goal they weren’t able to recover. The game ended in a 4-1 loss.
These Eagles finished the tournament as the Championship Finalists. Disappointed with the final result they left knowing that playing a strong team forced them to battle tougher, skate faster and work together as a team.
