The
Burlington Eagles have had three teams win tournaments in the past two weekends.
Our U12 A team won the Essa Eagles Fall Classic, and the U10 AA and U14 A Gold
teams won their Silver Stick Regional Qualifiers this past weekend to qualify
for the international finals!
The Under 12 A team travelled to Essa Township just outside
of Barrie to play in the Essa Eagles Fall Classic two weekends ago. The Eagles
made quick work out of their round robins opponents, defeating the Ottawa Sting
(6-0), the George Bell Titans (5-4), the Toronto Aeroes (5-1), and the Whitby
Wildcats (3-0). Earning a berth in the final against their first opponents,
Ottawa, the Eagles had a more difficult time than their first game as the
championship was tied 2-2 and went to overtime. Five minutes into the extra
frame, the Eagles scored to go undefeated on the weekend and win the Essa
Eagles Fall Classic! Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and parents
on a successful weekend.
Our Under 10 AA Eagles went down to Stratford to compete in
the Silver Stick Regional Qualifier last weekend, and also went undefeated over
the three days. Outscoring their opponents 19-4 in the round robin, the Eagles
finished top of their group after wins over West Niagara, Humber Valley, and
North Toronto. In the semi-finals the Eagles came up against league opponents,
the Milton Winterhawks, who they defeated 5-0 to beat Milton for the second
time this season. In the championship game against the host Stratford Warriors,
the Eagles went out to a quick 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. Despite
Stratford’s best efforts and scoring with 44 seconds left to bring the lead
down to one, the Eagles held on to win the Stratford Regional Silver Stick
Qualifier! Congratulations to the players, coaches, and parents on a fantastic
weekend, and good luck in January when you travel to Newmarket.
Finally, our U14 A Gold team went to Georgina to
play in another Silver Stick Regional Qualifier this past weekend, but had a
windier path to the finals than the two other Eagles teams. Starting on
Thursday night, the Eagles came out hot with a 9-0 win over the Barrie Colts.
After a defeat to the GOB Blues on Friday morning (5-1), the Eagles then played
their last two round robin games on Saturday losing to the Upper York Admirals
5-4 but defeating the Ottawa West Golden Knights 4-1. Despite going 2-2, the
Eagles were still the 4th seed out of five, and had to go up against
the GOB Blues in the semi-final who were the one seed. In a tight battle, the
Eagles scored the only goal of the game in the 2nd period to win 1-0
and advance to the finals against the only other team they had lost to, the
Upper York Admirals. Each period of the championship game saw the score tied, 1-1
after the first, 2-2 after the second, and Upper York scored with 46 seconds
remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime. Four minutes into
the extra period, the Eagles scored the winner to take the tournament and qualify
for the International Silver Stick Finals! Congratulations to all of the players,
coaches, and parents on an incredible weekend, and good luck in January when
you also travel to Newmarket to play in the international finals!
