U16 AA GOLD WIN THE OAKVILLE WINTER CLASSIC!
Our Under 16 AA Gold team was victorious this weekend in the Oakville Winter Classic! In a 16 team tournament, our Eagles went on a 7-0 run, including three games on Sunday, to take the championship against teams from all over Ontario!
In round robin play, the Eagles successfully defeated all their opponents with three close games against the Oakville Rangers Red team, Richmond Hill, and Waterloo (all 3-2) before finishing out the round robin with a 6-0 win over the Brantford 99ers to secure home ice for all knockout games on Sunday.
In the quarter-finals, the Eagles came up against the Kingston Canadiens. After going up 1-0 early in the first period, the Eagles gave up two goals in very quick succession to end the period down 2-1. The Eagles then responded early in the second period with two very quick goals of their own, and then held on to the 3-2 lead for the rest of the game to advance to the semis.
In the semi-finals the Eagles faced off against the London Jr. Knights who had only lost once leading into this game. Scoring once in each of the first two periods, London was then able to bring it within one goal with five minutes left in the third period to keep it close. With London pulling their goalie, the Eagles scored an empty net goal to secure their spot in the championship game.
Their final opponent were the Ottawa Sting, who had also only lost once in the lead-up to the finals. The Eagles scored first again to end the first period winning 1-0, but Ottawa responded quickly into the second to tie up the game. Adding one more goal before the end of the second period helped the Eagles go into the second intermission up 2-1, and then they added another one 30 seconds into the third and then another three minutes later to be up 4-1 with ten minutes left in the game. Despite Ottawa pulling their goalie for nearly four minutes, the Eagles held on and won the championship game 4-1!
